Boat Quay was one of two areas along the Singapore River where trading warehouses (go-downs) were
located. Daily, hundreds of bum boats and chong kongs plied the waters, delivering cargo to and
fro the freighters and steamers anchored in Singapore Harbor. Today, the buildings remain but the working boats
are gone. Boat Quay, along with neighboring Clarke Quay to the north, has been redeveloped into a stretch of
entertainment and eating establishments catering primarily to the tourist trade.
